Sam Sure – Hunger (single) (Black Butter Records)
Later this month, the excellent Black Butter Records will be releasing Sure’s latest single Hunger – and what a tune it is.
The opening build with its stuttering synths lead you to believe a drum n’ bass track tune is about to drop but instead Hunger locks into a mid-tempo groove and unravels into a sweet, soulful electro-pop tune.
Led by Sure’s soulful vocal, the track is backed by a sleek, modern production of thick synth pads, hand-claps, and some tasty pitch-shifted vocals, and is most certainly set to be a Radio 1 hit.
Oh, and just listen to the kick drum: a massively deep thud that’s been tuned to almost play the role of a second bass part. On that note, Hunger has a natural groove to it and while completely danceable in its own right, the single package comes complete with remixes from Shadow Child, DVWLX & Jaded.
The bass music remix of Shadow Child gets down to business right away with its four-to-the-floor house beat and pitch-shifted vocal loop, before dipping down to make way for the main vocal. The track then quickly builds back up with some white-noise before the beat drops along with a massive bass line. The instrumentation itself is sparing but this adds dynamic and allows each part to breath and do exactly what its meant to do. Great track.
The Jaded remix, however, might be the most immediate and club-ready of the remixes. A dynamic, vocal-driven house remix that’s right on point. Its linear arrangement, four-to-the-floor house beat, rhythmic keys, and deep bass line are irresistible. Expect to hear this one in clubs.
The DVWLX remix is arguably the most unique of the three. Not simply another bass remix, DVWLX explores the depths of bass. Despite the track’s blips and other production quirks, the DVWLX remix features an accessible and grooving arrangement where the pop hooks from the original are incorporated seamlessly. Brilliant stuff.
Hunger will be released 20 October, 2014. Pre-order the single now.
