MOKO – Ceremony (single) (MTA Records)

Following on from her much acclaimed Black EP in late 2013, London’s MOKO is gearing up to release a new 4-song EP entitled Gold.

2013 witnessed MOKO graduate from Goldsmiths before she headed out on tour with Chase & Status to perform their single Count On Me.

Late last week track #2 from the upcoming EP was posted online, and – wow – it’s one of those incredible tunes that we immediately fell in love with.

The Sade-esque, mid-paced verses of Ceremony are deep, moody and atmospheric, setting the tone and wrapping the listener up in its warm embrace.

At the 60-second mark, a lump in the throat forms as everything falls away but an emotional synth melody which builds the anticipation perfectly.

And then it happens. The chorus drops, MOKO leaps up an octave and combined with the drum n’ bass rhythms, Ceremony elevates to euphoric heights. Impassioned and emotive, the chorus of Ceremony is pure perfection.

Immaculately produced, on the new EP joining The Imposters (Black EP) on production are the skills of Two Inch Punch, Kwes and her label bosses Chase & Status.

Ceremony is a powerful, soulful, and atmospheric R&B pop number likely to appeal to fans of Rudimental and Emeli Sandé. Threaded throughout the track there are early 90’s R&B characteristics, but like Sade, there’s also a timelessness about it.

What a tune.

The Gold EP featuring Ceremony will be released on 7 September, 2014.
