Ásgeir – Was There Nothing? (single) (One Little Indian)
Following the release of his widely acclaimed debut English language album – a Sound Advice favourite of 2013 – In The Silence (read our review), Icelandic sensation Ásgeir is set to release Was There Nothing? as the next single from the album.
In The Silence has seen Ásgeir become Iceland’s biggest musical export since Björk with the record hitting the Top 40 across most of Europe. Further international success has now reached in the USA where Columbia Records released the album in March, Japan where he plays Fuji Festival this month, and Australia where the album went Top 10 and his upcoming shows sold out far in advance.
While the album showcased Ásgeir’s gorgeously melancholic folktronica, Was There Nothing? stripes everything back to basics. With just an acoustic guitar and warm, double-tracked vocals, Was There Nothing? is a melancholic, reflective number, and also one of the album’s highlight tracks. As we stated in our review of the album, it’s damn near impossible not to make comparison to Bon Iver.
Piano chords arrive half way through to add richness and while the song is melancholic, it’s far from depressing. In fact, there’s an undeniable sweetness about it (and the album overall).
Per the press release: Born and raised in the hamlet of Laugarbakki (population, 48) in the wilds of Iceland, Ásgeir comes from a large family of musicians. In 2012, at just 20 years of age, the release of Dyrd í dauðathogn made him an overnight sensation in Iceland breaking all records to become Iceland’s fastest and biggest selling debut album by a home grown artist – outselling even (label mate) Björk and Sigur Rós’ debuts. Staggeringly, one in ten of the Icelandic population now owning the album.
If you don’t already own the album, we’re fairly sure this single will convince you.
Was There Nothing? will be released as a single on 28 July, 2014.
