Franskild – Genesis (single) (self-released)
Since their initial support from BBC Introducing, the Swedish house duo Franskild have been on a hot streak. The duo’s previous EP, Eden, was described by Mixmag as “melancholic, dreamlike house music” and led to an opportunity to remix Maya Jane Coles track, Burning Bright, as well as reworking DEVolution’s With U.
Back in February we reviewed the single Clockworks – a deep and dark production made up of heavily percussive synths that sat comfortably alongside the work of Maya Jane Coles herself. However, the folk-y vocals of Rebekka Ojensa gave the song a distinctive and unmistakably Scandinavian quirk, and demonstrated Franskild’s appreciation of melody and songcraft.
With their debut album expected later this year and a string of remixes the Swedes are offering a free download of their latest single Genesis.
Continuing what seems to be Franskild’s tradition of delivering quality deep and dark tunes, Genesis – while bringing the goods with all the grooves, synth-stabs, and driving house beats to make it kill on the dancefloor – offers some interesting breakdowns and production quirks (including a cool tom pattern around 3:00) making it more interesting and edgier than the myriad of generic and predictable house music of late.
Another step in the right direction for this exciting new duo.
At the time of posting, Franskild are offering the track as a free download via Soundcloud.
