Anushka – Mansions (single) (Brownswood Recordings)

It seems Brighton is a hotbed for great music right now. Last Friday we reviewed the new single from Brighton duo MAO (read our review), and now we have the new single from fellow Brighton duo Anushka taken from from their upcoming debut full length entitled Broken Circuit.

Only last month we reviewed Anushka’s new EP Distorted Air – an excellent bass music collection, which melded future garage, R&B, pop, even hints of jazz, with a certain timelessness.

On Mansions, however, we’re introduced to a harder and edgier side to Anushka.

While the vocals of Victoria Port sound soulful, there’s an attitude as she sings “tear down the mansions” and later “what are you waiting for? Are you ready for war? Are you ready to fight?”.

Victoria’s playful rhythmic vocal swagger through the verses give the song a Basement Jaxx flavour but it’s the production work in particular where Anushka really turn things up. On Mansions, the duo’s bass music sounds are much darker than previously heard; the bass wub-wubs throughout the verses are combined with hard-hitting beats complete with a punchy four-to-the-floor-kick drum, which drives it all home.

Thanks largely to its classy production touches, Mansions is the perfect balance of creativity and song craft.

Brilliant stuff, indeed.

Mansions will be released as a single on 16 June, 2014 while the album – Broken Circuit – will be released 30 June, 2014 through Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. Pre-order the album via iTunes.
