Rae Morris – Do You Even Know? (Oceaán remix) (single) (Atlantic Records UK)

21-year old Blackpool artist Rae Morris is slated to release her debut album on Atlantic Records UK later this year.

In March, the album’s first single Do You Even Know? was unveiled. Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (HAIM, Sky Ferreira, Vampire Weekend), Do You Even Know? is a bewitching pop number that fuses Ellie Goulding style electro-pop with hints of Florence and The Machine, and HAIM (the latter particularly during the chorus, and vocally more so than musically).

While we wait for details on the album’s release, the aforementioned single has just been remixed by fellow newcomer, Oceaán. Back in February we reviewed the Oceaán track To Lose, which showcased the Belgium born, Manchester-based producer’s smooth and soulful brand of electronica, which saw his talents showing some SBTRKT-esque traits.

On this bass music remix, Oceaán strips things back, introduces conga drums to the fold, which he then pairs with Morris’ emotive vocal and combined, this reworking takes on a tribal feel. The already darkened original turns darker still around 0:50 with the arrival of a deep bass groove.

On this remix, Oceaán focuses on space and atmosphere with the remix essentially based around the vocal and conga rhythm. Rae Morris’ vocal is then complimented by a lingering reverb tail to create further atmosphere while the deep bass dips in and out enough to lay down the foundation but sparingly enough to let the space really creep in between.

Marvelous stuff.
