Anushka – Distorted Air (EP) (Brownswood Recordings)
Following the release of their debut EP Yes in April of last year, Anushka – the Brighton-based duo of Max Wheeler (producer) and Victoria Port (singer/songwriter) – are readying the release of their second EP, Distorted Air.
The four bass music tracks that make up the new EP meld future garage, R&B, pop, and even jazz, with a certain timelessness to it.
Victoria’s sugar-sweet, R&B-inflected vocal melodies are on full display during the UK garage-flavoured opener, Broken Circuit. Supported by a glistening and tasteful production, the song’s infectious R&B pop charms immediately hook the listener. A perfectly penned pop number that draws to mind AlunaGeorge both vocally and musically, expect to hear Broken Circuit all over Radio 1 airwaves.
Next up is Atom Bombs – a soulful, organ-and-vocal number that shows hints of mid-tempo, TLC. After 90 seconds, pitch-warped, UK garage-influenced beats enter and suddenly the focus is all about the production skills of Max Wheeler. Just check out the ever-shifting EQ work on this track.
World In A Room is the most floor-ready tune on the EP and wouldn’t have been out of place on the brilliant TRAXX – The House That Garage Built compilation from last year. Where the other 3 tracks are pop tunes with dance elements, World In A Room would appear was written with the dancefloor in mind.
The expertly crafted and jazzy final number Blessing takes the previous track’s danceability and intertwines it with Victoria’s soulful vocal acrobatics making it the tune of the EP. Delicious stuff.
Though still in their infancy, with the release of the Distorted Air EP, Anushka already sound like a finely-tuned, well-oiled machine.
In addition to the forthcoming EP, 2014 looks like to be a massive year for Anushka having just played SXSW this week, and now supporting Gorgon City for a handful of shows throughout the UK in April and May.
Distorted Air will be released 19 April, 2014 on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, and will be available both digitally and 12″ vinyl.
