Jamie xx – Sleep Sound (single) (Young Turks)

While we all (im)patiently wait for news on a Jamie xx album, his sporadically released singles continue to captivate and enthrall.

While The xx are nearing the end of their residency at New York City’s Park Avenue Armory, Jamie xx has unveiled a brand new track, Sleep Sound. And it’s a killer.

Fans of Four Tet‘s rhythmically complex, textured, and vibrantly colorful tunes (think 2013’s excellent, Beautiful Rewind) will find much joy inĀ Sleep Sound.

This thing is a mesh of texture, and somehow simultaneously both atmospheric and percussive – from woody snares to plucked glissando strings – Sleep Sound is almost tangible. The warped vocal sample threaded throughout the track calls to mind 40’s/ 50’s gospel group The Jubalaires and adds yet more texture as well as a peculiar barbershop quality. Brilliant stuff.

Once the deep, sub-bass and club beats drop at exactly 1:03, all the jittery, delay-effected, harp-like arpeggios that the listener tries desperately to make sense of during the song’s opening minute, suddenly snap into shape and Sleep Sound locks into a steady groove that’s built for the floor.

Sleep Sound / Girl will be released 5 May, 2014 digitally and on 12″ vinyl through Young Turks. Pre-order now.
