Howie B – Frankies City (single) (HB Recordings / PIAS)
For those unfamiliar with Howie B , here’s a quick introduction to the man’s work:
He collaborated with Soul II Soul on their epochal Club Classics Vol 1. He has written songs with Björk. He has produced U2. He has played bonkers sets of boshing techno and remixed everyone from Placebo to Annie Lennox.
Through his label Pussyfoot, his artist albums with Polydor (including his Skylab alias amongst others) he built up his own reputation as a formidable artist in tandem with his growing prowess as a production genius across the ‘90s and 2000s.
And now, Howie B is back and about to release his first studio album in over 5 years, Down With The Dawn.
“Frankies City” is the first single from the upcoming album and boy, is it an intriguing and addictive little tune. The new single is dark, slightly imposing, and a tad creepy. Made up of whirring synths, glistening retro-keys, and ambient noise, “Frankies City” is propelled forward by its fat and gritty beat.
This song is all about that groove – it’s simply irrefutable and guaranteed to send the listener immediately to the dancefloor.
In terms of its quirkiness, kookiness and undeniable groove, “Frankies City” gives off a vibe similar to that of “Creep” by Freaks, Maetrik and Zeta Reticula from the astounding Maceo Plex ‘DJ Kicks’ release of last year.
The single Frankies City was released on 9 December, 2013 while the new album, Down With The Dawn, will be released on 7 April, 2014.
