Tiger Stripes – Sisters EP (Desolat Records)

Since first bursting onto the scene back in 2004, Swedish producer/artist, Tiger Stripes has released and handful of quality releases on labels including Ibadan, Get Physical, Drumcode and Strictly Rhythm. And now along comes the ‘Sisters’ EP – Tiger Stripes’ debut on Desolat.

The 9-and-a-half-minute title track is a slow build with just a single-note bass build, a thick 4/4 kick pulse, and distorted hats. This song moves in 60-second increments and as soon as the heavily digitized keys arrive after the first minute the character of the song is revealed.

The vocal hook arrives right on two minutes and brings with it a hint of old-school Motown. All elements now combined, things really get into full swing at the 3-minute mark with the arrival of the open hat.

Its simplicity and soulful and classic-house vocal hook are key to the tune. All in all “Sisters” is a solid house number yet interestingly its punchy and metallic production choices would actually be more at home in a techno tune.

Next up is the hard-hitting “Keep A Movin” which too boasts strong techno production characteristics mixed with some deep-house, slotting Tiger Stripes firmly into the Desolt roster. “Keep A Movin” is a dark, moody, and rolling number with minimal melodies, minimal instrumentation, minimal dynamics, and minimal breaks. After four minutes a vocal hook sounds but for only one bar before disappearing arriving later for another bar a minute or so later. This tune is all about the atmosphere.

The third and final track is a remix of the title track by German producer/DJ tINI who puts her personal stamp on the original, capitalizing on the techno elements from the original and turning the track into a dark, mechanical and hypnotic techno number.  Interestingly, tINI also opts to remove much of the vocal, and instead the remix’s biggest hook is its woozy and meandering bassline.

Solid stuff.

The ‘Sisters’ EP was released 13 January, 2014 on 12″ vinyl followed by a digital release on 20 January, 2014.
