Wolf Alice – She (single) (Chess Club Records)

Following the release of the singles, “Fluffy / White Leather” (read our review) and “Bros / Every Cloud” (read our review) earlier this year, North London’s most exciting new guitar act Wolf Alice are set to release their debut EP, ‘Blush’ (artwork above) on 7 October, 2013. In the interim the band have shared new track “She” – the first taste from the upcoming EP.

The much talked about (and deservedly so…) indie quartet of Ellie Rowsell, Joel Amey, Theo Ellis and Joff Oddie burst onto the scene in 2012 with “Leaving You” – a download only track that made its way onto Radio 1, which then proceeded to reach the top of NME’s Radar section and Hype Machine chart.

“She” is the most urgent we’ve heard the band yet. A distorted-bass and up-tempo drum rhythm combine before Ellie Roswell’s gorgeously melodic vocals enter while the role of the guitar is more textural.

All anticipation is fulfilled when 45 seconds later the guitars let loose, distortion kicks in and a euphoric chorus delivers exactly as hoped and here, “She” recalls all the glory of Elastica – only harder rocking.

While only 3:12 in duration, “She” features another journeying arrangement which somehow manages to create the illusion of it being epic. Bookended between two brilliantly rocking sides is a delicate and hushed middle section that takes place around 1:35 – 2:15 and miraculously it feels like a natural respite despite the fact at the song is only 90 seconds in!

You’ve got to love Wolf Alice – they have the perfect balance of pop and grit and always come up with interesting and unpredictable arrangements. “She” might just be their most accomplished track yet.

Another absolutely brilliant single from easily one of the most exciting up and coming guitar bands we’ve heard all year.
