Tripwires – Shimmer (single) (Frenchkiss Records)

Holy shit! What a tune! From the opening seconds of Tripwires single “Shimmer” the listener is immediately transported back to the  mid-90’s when the likes of Starsailor briefly ruled the airwaves. This was also the same period where it seemed every band was paying homage to the late Jeff Buckley (e.g. Coldplay, Muse, Starsailor).

“Shimmer” is reminiscent of those moments. That isn’t to suggest that the Reading quartet sound dated – quite the opposite, really.

An utterly brilliant and most refreshing tune to hear especially in 2013, “Shimmer” recalls Radiohead circa ‘Pablo Honey, the early mentioned Starsailor, and early Travis with the riffing out shoegaze of Swervedriver.

It’s melodic, it’s dreamy, while still rockin’ as hell. The songwriting is hooky, the chord progressions are brilliant – all in all “Shimmer” is seriously one of the best rock tunes we’ve heard in the past couple of months.

Produced by Nicholas Verhnes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter), the single is lifted from the band’s forthcoming debut album ‘Spacehopper’ set for release on 17 June, 2013 on Frenchkiss Records.

The single, “Shimmer”, will be released 10 June 2013.
