North Atlantic Oscillation – Chirality (single) (Kscope)
Championed by the likes of Elbow’s Guy Garvey, Marc Riley, Zane Lowe, BBC Scotland, and BBC Introducing amongst others, North Atlantic Oscillation are an Edinburgh based post-progressive rock and electronica act made up of Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, programming) and Ben Martin (drums, synths, programming), joined live by Bill Walsh (bass, vocals) and Chris Howard (bass & synths).
The band are about to release a new EP entitled ‘Chirality’ – the song of which appeared on their stunning full length album, ‘Fog Electric’, of last year. The EP features remixes by the Mercury nominated act The Invisible and respected newcomers Nedry alongside the title track and an alternate mix of previous single ‘Savage With Barometer’. In addition, the EP also features the band’s cover of ‘One Good Reason’ by Bob Mould. Upon hearing the NAO version of the track, Mould was so impressed that he invited the band to support him on his upcoming May UK tour.
A melodic and deeply complex number both in instrumentation and arrangement, “Chirality” takes the listener through its many transitions yet somehow remaining completely fluid. The vocoder vocals and electronic drum loops during the breakdown give the song an electronic edge, adding yet another interesting element to the band’s unique sound.
The ‘Chirality’ EP will be released digitally on 20 May, 2013 while ‘Fog Electric’ will be re-released on 3 June as a 2CD set, featuring the original album along with a bonus disc containing the ‘Chirality’ EP.
