Feathers – Soft (single) (NYX Records)

All-girl synthpop act Feathers released their debut single “Land of the Innocent” last month (read our review) and are about to release the second single, ‘Soft’, from their forthcoming debut album, ‘If All Now Here’.

Vocalist Anastasia Dimou, bassist Courtney Voss and keyboardist Kathleen Carmichael recently shared the stage with their heroes Depeche Mode at SXSW and with their debut album almost upon us, 2013 is looking to be a huge year for Feathers.

New single “Soft” clearly demonstrates the band’s love for Depeche Mode. Recalling a similar feel to “Strangelove” crossed with the Pet Shop Boys style synthpop, Feathers’ sound is indeed a nostalgic and kitschy one. Despite its up-tempo beat, “Soft” is actually down-tempo in mood and texture.

A dark but poppy synth melody provides the hook throughout the verses before the song’s fragile but gorgeous pop chorus arrives around 1:45. Like Depeche Mode, there is also a sensuality to “Soft” particularly during the chorus.

Luscious and definitely more-ish, the single “Soft” will be released on 20 May, 2013 while their debut album, ‘If All Now Here’, will be released 27 May, 2013.
