I Am A Camera – Rent (single) (self-released)

Following the release of the single “Factory Boys” and a remix of Lana Del Rey’s “Born To Die” last year, U.K. electro-pop act I Am A Camera have been in the studio putting the finishing touches to their debut album.

In the meantime, the duo consisting of Francesca Ross from Manchester and Ian Watt from Northern Ireland, have recorded a cover of Pet Shop Boys, “Rent”.

On deciding to record the song I Am A Camera said “anyone who knows us will have gathered that we love Pet Shop Boys. ‘Rent’ is in our Top Ten songs of all time.. so this was a lil’ scary to put out. It’s completely different to the original but we feel we still captured what the song is really about”

Slowing down the tempo and adding layers of dreamy atmospherics, I Am A Camera create a darkened and moving rendition of the Pet Shop Boys classic.

With its gorgeous vocals and equally gorgeous production of electronic percussion, synths and pads, here the duo evoke Goldfrapp at their moodiest (think “Black Cherry”) crossed with Phantogram. The emotion truly sinks in during the song’s final 90 seconds where strings are pushed higher in the mix for dramatic effect. Simply stunning.
