Daughter – Medicine (The Chainsmokers Remix) (self-released)

Ladies and gentleman meet the next breed of superstar DJ’s, The Chainsmokers – a New York based Producer / DJ duo consisting of Andrew Winter and Alex Pall.

These are two very, very savvy, charming and humorous lads (check out their online bio. Likewise, their submission was also full of wit and attention grabbing anecdotes) who have played the likes of LIV and Set in Miami, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Roxbury in Los Angeles, Soldier Field in Chicago, Thekla in Bristol, Skybar in London, Villa in Ibiza, 1OAK in Vegas, and both Lavo and Le Bain in New York.

Only three years after forming the duo currently hold residencies at NYC clubs like 1OAK, SL, Riff Raffs, SL East (Hamptons), South Pointe (Hamptons), and have shared nights with DJ’s including Calvin Harris, Avicii, Bingo Players, Swanky Tunes, Arty, Pete Tong, R3Hab, Wolfgang Gartner, Max Vangeli, Alesso, Steve Aoki, and Joachim Garraud.

By all accounts there aren’t too many busier or hardworking lads than these fellas having also played countless events including LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesey), Christian Dior, Microsoft, Bing, New York Fashion Week, Art Basel Miami, The Sundance Film Festival, and Rolls Royce as well as spinning for Jay-Z, Rihanna, Tiesto, Bruno Mars, Busta Rhymes, Usher, Lebron James, Ne-Yo, and Drake.

The duo made an official end of the year compilation mix for Armin Van Buuren‘s Napith record label. Their recent remixes of Jonsi, Two Door Cinema Club and Little Daylight went #1, #2 and #4 on HypeMachine. At the time of writing, their remix of Daughter’s “Medicine” is #2.

So, with all their high livin’, glitz, glamour and humour, selecting the gorgeous and fragile Daughter track “Medicine” seems like an odd choice, right? The duo explain “Basically we heard this tune on a cold winter day in New York and fell head over heals for it. We loved ‘Medicine’  for the fact that you couldn’t really tell of the song was happy or sad, and that appealed to us a lot.  So we got to work and it was a lot of back and forth for us because we needed a symmetry between her soft vocals and our own production that appealed to the ambiguity of the song itself”.

And boy, do they do this song justice. With the utmost respect for the original, during the first minute The Chainsmokers simply add a kick-pulse behind the song. After 1:15, a steady house beat gently enters giving the song further momentum while thanks to the addition of its warm synth layers, temperatures begins to rise with anticipation.

It’s from 2:15 however the tension really starts to build, and leading to the 3:00 mark when the main-room beat finally drops. Combined with its synths, here The Chainsmokers produce a brand of commercial-house that sits comfortably alongside Zedd, Ivan Gough, Sebastian Ingrosso and maybe even Armin van Buuren.

A brilliant and solidly produced remix, the duo are offering a free download of the track via The Chainsmokers Soundcloud. The original version of “Medicine” by Daughter can be found on ‘The Wild Youth’ EP, which was released in March of 2012.
