Mount Kimbie – Made To Stray (single) (Warp Records)

Last week, Mount Kimbie, the London based electronic music duo consisting of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos, shared a new track, “Made To Stray”, from their forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Cold Spring Fault Less Youth’ (cover art above).

“Made To Stray” is the first track since the duo’s critically acclaimed 2010 debut album, ‘Crooks & Lovers’. In a press release for the upcoming new album, Maker said, “Two years is a long time. Tastes change, what you want out of your life changes, and so on. Naturally, how we want to sound has changed too.” Indeed, on “Made To Stray” we hear a new side to Mount Kimbie.

The most immediately noticeable change is the energy; the glitch-y and twitchy beats of ‘Crooks & Lovers’ have been replaced with a steady house beat. Fear not – all the wonderful textures and complexities are still on display and “Made To Stray” is a mesmerizing collage of sounds; organs, whirring synths, big kick-drum thuds, and percussive mallets.

“Made To Stray” is also  less ambient than their debut (which isn’t to say the album will be…) and along with “Mayor” and “Carbonated” it’s the most immediate we’ve heard the duo.

Around 3:15 vocals enter for the song’s final 90 seconds giving the song an indie (ala Foals) quality.

A brilliant taster for the  upcoming record, “Made To Stray” is lifted from Mount Kimbie’s upcoming album ‘Cold Spring Fault Less Youth’, which is scheduled for a 27 May 2013 release on Warp Records.

In the interim, sign up to the Mount Kimbie mailing list at Mount and you’ll receive a free download of “Made To Stray”. Simple as that!
