Vision Fortune – XIV (single) (Faux Discx / Gringo Records)

Vision Fortune are set to release their debut LP, ‘Mas Fiestas con el Grupo Vision Fortune’, on 13th May 2013. The album will be a split release between Faux Discx and Gringo Records, a duo of labels that has been behind previous releases from like-minded artists such as Cold Pumas (one of our favourite records for 2012 – read our review), Sauna Youth (read our review) and Hookworms.

Brothers Alexander and Austin Peru first met Andres Cuatroquesos in a small boys boarding school in Menen, Belgium. They rekindled their friendship in London seven years ago, and proceeded to meet up every week at an after-college music club. There, they were given the opportunity by a generous music teacher to record in his home studio in Hither Green, and there they honed their sound under the careful direction of Mr Healey.

Per the press release, ‘Mas Fiestas con el Grupo Vision Fortune’ is an album borne out of desperate economic uncertainty, loosely based on John Kay’s infamous ‘Parable of the Ox’ – itself a thinly veiled allegory for unbridled capitalism. The upcoming album represents the tragic life and death of the aforementioned ox, whose weight is solely determined by the aggregated ‘wisdom of the crowd’. The music embodies both the self-interested nature of hysterical spectators, and the agonising sense of culpability following the animal’s eventual demise.

The first track to surface from the forthcoming record is “XIV”.  Devoid of variation in tempo or key, during the song’s 5 minutes and 45 seconds, the listener is taken on a hypnotic journey.

“XIV” is all about repetition with subtle variations in texture and volume occurring over time; check out the repetitive build led by a jarring guitar riff that begins at 3:10 and develops in intensity until the song’s eventual end.

A simple and minimalist set-up of drums, bass, guitar and synth is bought to life with a dreamy landscape, counter melodies and rhythmic hypnosis. Meanwhile, the crisp production accentuates every nuance, be it a delayed guitar stroke, swarming synth or a reverberated vocal.

“XIV is intriguing and certainly more-ish. The album ‘Mas Fiestas con el Grupo Vision Fortune’ will be released on 13 May, 2013. In the interim, the band are offering a free download of “XIV” via the Faux Discx Soundcloud (and/or below).
