In preparation for their debut album due later this year, Leeds indie-pop quartet Just Handshakes will be releasing the album’s first single, “London Bound” on 18 February, 2013.

Forming while at university, the band released their very first single, ‘Operation Daybreak’, back in 2008 followed by the ‘Paper Cranes / Talking Picture’ single in February 2009, and the ‘Shipwrecks / Go Go Go’ single soon after in August 2009. A 4-song EP entitled ‘New Adventures In Pop’ was released in 2011, and most recently a Limited Edition Tape featuring 8 live songs, in April 2012. Their sound has developed gradually with each of their releases, however the one thing that has remained ever present is their shared love of C86.

In addition to support slots for bands such as The Mystery Jets, Pete and the Pirates, The Shout Out Louds and Still Corners, the band recorded a session for Marc Riley on Radio 6 and have received airplay from the likes of Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson and Gideon Coe.

With all that said, as you might expect, “London Bound” is the sound of a band about to blow up.

What initially sounds like a post-punk number in its build formed around a melodic bass line, angular guitar textures, and driving kick-drum and hi-hat rhythm, “London Bound” lures you in immediately. Combined with Clara’s quirky and rhythmic vocal, featuring a tone and style that recalls Stereolab, the song moves swiftly into a glorious C86 inspired brand of indie-pop.

Hook-laden and irresistible, the chorus brings with it a mouthful of sugary pop goodness backed by a four-to-the-floor beat. Bite a little deeper however and you’ll find the taste is in fact bittersweet.

“London Bound” is both charming and nostalgic with its familiar template of jangly guitars and coloured by Casio keys.

An gem of a single, “London Bound” will be released as a free download and accompanied by a remix b-side on 18 February 2013 through California based label, Bleeding Gold .
