The xx – Sunset (Jamie xx Remix) (single) (Young Turks Records)

‘Coexist’, the sophomore album from The xx, would have to have in our Top 3 favourite albums for 2012 (read our lengthy review). A stunningly, gorgeous and moving record.

Before ‘Coexist’ (artwork above) was released, the trio had said in interviews that the album was inspired by “clubmusic”. This influence was subtle in some places and blindingly obvious in others. More so than any other track on the album, “Sunset” was certainly one of those where that influence was evident.

Jamie xx who of course produced the album version has now remixed the track and transformed it into the dance anthem it hinted it could be.

Tastefully remixed, all of the elements, charms, and atmospherics of The xx are still here in all their glory. However, what was once a thudding kick-drum pulse is now a driving house beat. The funky bass line that supplies the backbone to the track is even more pronounced.

The melodic vocals  help create texture but are also used to add dynamic – several times throughout the remix, all instrumentation is removed, leaving just a naked vocal before the beats bring it all back home.

The remix appeared online January 3, 2013 and if you lived in the U.K. the remix was offered free as part of iTunes’ 12 Days of Christmas for 72 hours.

The original album version of “Sunset” appears on The xx album Coexist released 10 September 2012 on Young Turks.
