Deptford Goth – Union (single) (Merok Records)

We’re deep in December and already 2013 is looking to be one hell of a year for new music. “Union” by Deptford Goth is yet one perfect example of such promise for the new year.

Deptford Goth is 28 year old South Londoner Daniel Woolhouse who studied art and worked as a primary/elementary teacher’s assistant before deciding to give his all to music. Soon after, Deptford Goth remixed tracks for Purity Ring (listen to the Deptford Goth remix of “Ungirthed”), Blood Diamonds (listen to the Deptford Goth remix of “Grins”), and S.C.U.M (listen to the Deptford Goth remix of “Faith Unfolds”) in addition to displaying a knack for producing promo videos.

“Union” shares similarity to the work of James Blake in terms of production and minimalism but without the obvious R&B and soul inflections that permeates throughout the aforementioned artist’s work. Instead, “Union” combines gorgeous Bon Iver type vocal melodies and feelings of melancholy with a similar timbre to The xx’s ‘Coexist‘ right down to the pulsing club beats.  The thick synth pads that emerge in the chorus add a welcome layer of warmth to an otherwise emotionally raw number.

“Union” is an absolutely stunning and moving introduction to ‘Life After Defo’, the  forthcoming debut album from Deptford Goth slated for an early 2013 release through Merok Records.  Abundantly tuneful, immediately accessible, and extremely more-ish, “Union” has every chance of being a hit on airwaves next year. Expect massive things in 2013 for this exciting new artist.

Update January 7, 2013: Deptford Goth has announced the album ‘Life After Defo’ will be released on 18 March, 2013.
