Theme Park – Two Hours (EP) (Transgressive Records)
“Two Hours” is a new 4-song EP from Theme Park, which features the title track along with 3 cover tunes; “Wildest Moments” (Jessie Ware), “Bloodbuzz Ohio” (The National) and “Ready For The Floor” (Hot Chip).
“Two Hours” is the latest single from Theme Park’s forthcoming debut album set for release in 2013 and follows the success of recent single, “Jamaica” (read our review), which surfaced online in June and was the Sound Advice ‘song of the summer’.
Prior to the two album singles the London quartet released their debut single back in August 2011 entitled “A Mountain We Love” with b-side “Wax” and a second single entitled “Milk” with b-side “Ghost” in December 2011. April 2012 saw their first official U.S. release in the form of the “Wax” EP, which featured the two singles and their respective b-sides along with a bonus remix track.
Less than 3:00 in duration, “Two Hours” is a up-tempo indie-rock track with dark accents with a similar style and temperament to “Sometime Around Midnight” by The Airborne Toxic Event. The song’s melancholic lyrics are a far cry from the feel good nature of “Jamaica” however like “Jamaica” the single glows with nostalgia.
Given the melancholy themes of “Two Hours”, it’s quite fitting that the band should cover The National. Their take on “Bloodbuzz Ohio” is a great one; the guitar work is gorgeous and more melodic than the original while the dual vocals also work a treat.
The band’s cover of Jessie Ware’s “Wildest Moments” sees Theme Park embody Talking Heads. Increasing the tempo, their ability to transform the soul-bearing original into a danceable track with tasty synth and percussion is rather genius.
In contrast, the quartet’s cover of Hot Chip’s “Ready On Floor” transforms the indie-electronic original into a melancholic and minimalist number with just guitars and vocal. A unique adaptation with some exquisite melodic guitar work; funnily enough on this track Theme Park sound like The National.
While we impatiently await the full length album, “Two Hours” is a great little EP revealing a new and more emotional side to the band.
The EP “Two Hours” will be released on 4 November 2012.
