FAYE – Mad Dog (single) (Best Fit Recordings)
Swedish electro-pop artist, FAYE recently inked a deal with Best Fit Recordings, an independent record label founded in 2012 by Richard Thane – editor of leading UK-based online music magazine The Line Of Best Fit. Her first single was released back in June in the form of the electro-ballad “Water Against The Rocks” (available digitally and as a limited edition 7” from Rough Trade).
“Mad Dog” surfaced online earlier this week and precedes the release of FAYE’s official second single “Breathe Out” (due in October).
No one creates pop quite like the Swedes (Robyn, Swedish House Mafia,Niki and The Dove etc.). Produced by Stockholm production duo Montauk, the backdrop to “Mad Dog” is unmistakably Swedish.
The opening verse of “Mad Dog” is lurking and moody, which immediately contrasts the euphoric vocals heard on “Water Against The Rocks”. Instead on “Mad Dog” FAYE has an attitude and defiance in her voice with a heavy U.S. Urban/R&B flavour.
When the song steps out from the moodiness of the verses and into an enormous vocal chorus, FAYE’s voice changes gear into a heartfelt rapture.
The production is of course immaculate made up of buzzing synths, pulsing basses, and big electronic kicks. The synths in the chorus and the vocal effect added to the end words during the verses add an atmospheric quality to the track.
Perfectly written, perfectly produced and perfectly executed, “Mad Dog” is indeed a perfect slice of electro-pop and has all the markings to be a cross-over hit, particularly in the U.S.
