Savages – Husbands / Flying To Berlin (single) (Pop Noire Records)
‘Husbands’ is the debut single by new UK four piece, Savages. OK, cutting straight to the chase; Savages sound like ‘Siouxsie and The Banshees’ circa ‘The Scream’ and ‘Join Hands’. Specifically, ‘Husbands’ embodies the angst and speed of ‘The Scream’ while b-side ‘Flying To Berlin’ has more of the exploration and experimentation of ‘Join Hands’.
The fact vocalist Jehnny Beth sounds eerily similar to Siouxsie Sioux is not something the band have tried to hide even opting for the dual-vocal production in key phrases (a recognizable Siouxsie Sioux trademark) along with chants of “Oi! Oi! Oi!”. See 0:53 in ‘Husbands’ for example.
That being said Savages may sound like ‘Siouxsie and The Banshees’ but their music is creative and interesting enough not be considered derivative. Most importantly, Savages manage to capture the intensity and spirit of post-punk in a way that has not been captured by many of the other recent post-punk revivalists.
Even citing authors such as JG Ballard as an influence further exemplifies Savages’ commitment to create authentic and enthralling post-punk, since several bands including Joy Division cited JG Ballard’s ‘High Rise’ as a major influence on their music.
‘Husbands’ is an enthralling and captivating listen; it’s dark, claustrophobic and angst ridden and at only 3:04 in length, has an undeniable urgency to it. The mood and sound is supported by an authentically 70’s post-punk production right down to the tinny sounding drums, buzzing bass tones and abrasive guitars. But it’s not all doom and gloom; ‘Husbands’ oozes with pop smarts and is likely to be one of the catchiest songs you hear this year.
B-side ‘Flying To Berlin’ (4:49) is a more complex song than ‘Husbands’. More relaxed in sound while still containing tension and an ever-present feeling that things could explode at any time. ‘Flying To Berlin’ is bass driven, backed with a 70’s disco-beat and coated with shimmering guitar textures and shows that Savages are a band capable of producing complex album material that will require and deserve more than just a single play.
The band’s debut album is due next year and after just two songs, I’m captivated. ‘Husband’ is available now as a digital single or as a limited edition 7”.
